Wombat Notes

I believe this is three weeks in a row. Despite not feeling well last week, I was still able to get some work done last Tuesday which allowed me to get this strip up (relatively) within my deadline. Taking a break from the current story line to catch up with a character we haven't seen in a while. This strip takes place on Valentine's Day, which...I know, I know...took place almost a week ago now. But I've never been a fan of the idea that Holiday's build up days, weeks, or even months in advance, and yet almost at the stroke of midnight, everything becomes stale.

Originally, in the last panel, I had the wombat saying "I miss you," after Ashlee hangs up, but I'm worried the Wombat comes off a little stalker-ish in this one. I was trying to go a bit more for sad, and I think what I went with in the final panel helps, but I don't know...what do you guys think? Either way we get to see Ashlee again, and it looks like her and Amanda are going to start hanging out again, but Ashlee and the Wombat will NOT be getting back together.

Amanda's sweat shirt in this one is not meant to indicate any sports team affiliation on my part. What I know about sports could just about fit in a zip lock baggie (not even the jumbo ones, but the sandwich size), though I saw on the news tonight that there's a game coming up that they're playing in and it seemed fairly important. No, the purpose of the sweat shirt is to indicate the level of seriousness Amanda considers a date on Valentine's Day (you know...in case her dialog in the second panel didn't convey that enough). The real Amanda...I think...isn't a big fan of cliché dating traditions. Though as long as I've known her, she always has had plans on Valentine's day...hmmm...maybe I've misread her all these years. The "I.U." on her shirt, just represents the fact that she's from Indiana. After John and Amanda broke up, I had promised not to include any real life relationships in the comic again, but (fairly) recent events in Amanda's life have given me ideas that are way too good to not use in the strip.

So, as I reveled on my blog recently (which you can reach at www.neilbryer.com I'm working on a redesign of the Wombat Comic website. I've got a design that I like, so it's just a matter of having time to create the graphic elements and getting it coded. It should be fairly obvious when it's done as this site will look totally different. I hope you all like it as it's going to be quite a bit of work as I'll have to code two different versions of the page. One for the newer "tall" strips and one for the older "wide" strips.
